7 press gang
Вербовщики во флот. Press gang — так называлась морская команда, которая набирала людей в плавание. Ещё в XIII в. таким способом вербовали мужчин на военную службу. Некоторые капитаны судов сами формировали команды. Это продолжалось до тех пор, пока в XIX в. не была основана Impress Service — служба, вербующая матросов в принудительном порядке, со сборными пунктами в тех местах, где проживало много мореплавателей. Impress Service хватала мужчин в тавернах, снимала с судов в открытом море, и «завербованные» таким образом люди составляли около половины каждой корабельной команды. Королевский морской флот пользовался таким способом вербовки до 1830 г. После повышения оплаты и улучшения условий службы «добровольная вербовка» сменилась добровольной службой, хотя Impressement (насильная вербовка), строго говоря, никогда не была упразднена. Слово press (нажимать) не имеет ничего общего со словом pressing (срочный, неотложный) в значении forcing (принуждённый), а происходит от prest money French prêter — давать взаймы, и именно в этом значении оно используется в данном случае.
